We believe clients should understand how legal fees work before making the decision to retain a lawyer. Because every family law matter is different, legal fees will vary depending on the issues involved, the complexity of the case, and the work required.
Free 15-Minute Consultation
We offer a complimentary 15-minute consultation for prospective clients. This gives us an opportunity to learn about your matter, determine whether we are the right fit for your needs, and explain the next steps. During this call, we will also discuss our fee structure and answer any questions you may have about the cost of legal services.
Hourly Billing
Most family law matters are billed on an hourly basis. This means you are billed for the time spent working on your file. Our hourly rates are competitive, and your retainer agreement will clearly outline our rates, billing practices, and payment terms before any work begins.
Flat Fee Services
Certain services are offered on a flat fee basis, including:
● Independent Legal Advice (ILA)
● Notary services
● Commissioning of documents
● Review of domestic contracts
● Simple uncontested divorce matters
● Other limited-scope legal services, where appropriate
If your matter qualifies for a flat fee, we will confirm the amount with you before any work begins.
Retainers
Most litigation matters require an initial retainer — a deposit held in trust and applied toward legal fees and disbursements as work is completed. The retainer amount depends on the nature and complexity of your case. If additional funds are required as your matter progresses, we will let you know in advance and explain why.
Disbursements
In addition to legal fees, your matter may involve certain out-of-pocket expenses, such as court filing fees, process server charges, courier or postage costs, government search fees, expert or professional reports, and transcript or document production costs. These disbursements are separate from our legal fees and are billed to you as they're incurred. Wherever possible, we'll let you know about significant disbursements in advance so there are no surprises on your account.
Our Commitment
We understand that going through a family law matter is difficult enough on its own, and our goal is to support you through it — not add to the burden. That's why we offer highly competitive rates, keep you informed at every step, and provide regular, easy-to-understand accounts. We aim to deliver practical, efficient, and cost-effective representation, and we're always available to answer questions about your fees or billing.
